Phil Galfond’s Online Poker Changes Proposal

January 22, 2012

This time I make an exception with my article. We, at HowToLearnPoker.net focus on analyzing interesting poker hands and at the same time share very interesting poker news. As I said, this week is a bit of an exception because I write about the blog of Phil Galfond.

Phil is one of the most known poker pros in the world. He started his own blog in January, 2012 and has already posted an article which got the interest of thousands of poker players. In the last years there have been some unethical issues in online poker and most players are aware of that. Unfortunately no one raised his voice for a change, until now! Phil wrote a very long article about what should be changed in online poker in his opinion.

His main discussions are:

  1. Databases/Tracking Sites
  2. Screen Name Changes
  3. Anonymous Heads Up Tables
  4. Heads Up Tables Lobby
  5. Rush Poker System (or similar to it)
  6. Must Move Tables
  7. Rewards/Promotions For Active Players
  8. Button War Problem

The idea behind these issues is the same: the creation of a more fair and fun game. Nowadays regulars use all kinds of programs to get as much information on their opponents as they can. They are aware of the huge advantages of position and also know who the fish at the table are. The problem is when this fish leaves the whole table breaks up. Of course it might be good for the individual in short run, but it is very bad for the industry as a whole. Just think about it, if all new players are handled this way then no players will start playing poker in the future.

Phil discusses in his article the above mentioned critical issues and tries to find an answer to how poker rooms could force regulars to play against each other as well and not only against new players. The different arguments collected by Phil are great and also hard to complain against. The only question is if poker rooms will take them seriously or not. These changes need time for sure but they can be the future of online poker. In the end, new players are always needed in the game and somehow poker rooms have to make these games attractive for new players as well. If these new players lose every day then they will give up soon.

If you are interested in the issue, then visit Phil’s blog and read everything in details. I guess by the time you get there, you can also read hundreds of comments from players as Phil really touched a topic which gets the anger, hope, disappointment etc. out of many players. Phil himself encourages his readers to discuss the issue on as many online forums as possible. Share your ideas and opinion to have a better future for online poker.
